Top 3 Gaming Rants – Xbox 360 and PS3
Everyone likes a good rant every now and then, there’s no mistaking that and today, I’ve compiled short but important list to explore both the rants of gamers that come up time and time again and those of my own, which I find myself constantly complaining about.
Achievements and Trophies
For me, achievements and trophies is a love hate thing. I personally enjoy squeezing every last drop out of my games and generally achievements and trophies allow me to do this, when you get your 100% on a game or your Platinum Trophy, outside of constantly played multiplayer games, you can be pretty sure you’ve played your game to death, get that true sense of completion and ready up that game for trade in.
Rarely do I use them for bragging rights, however, there are a few which I’m personally proud of, Mile High Club on Modern Warfare for example, way back when, a classic case of “just one more go”. After sinking many hours into it I finally cracked it late one night, with eyes blood shot and hands shaking. A true sense of achievement for me and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
This is what achievements and trophies should be about, something that you have to work for, something that is not simply rewarded for doing nothing or simply playing through the game. Whilst maybe a little extreme for an example, The Simpsons Game, Press START to play, 5GS, yeah it’s probably there as a joke from the developers but you get my point.
Then on the flip side you have unobtainable ones, as a self confessed completionist, maybe with a touch of OCD, these drive me nuts, those achievements that are simply out of reach because either the developers did not implement them properly, online game servers have been shut down or the game can no longer be played, i.e. 1 vs. 100. To be prevented from unlocking gamerscore due to technical problems of whatever kind is most infuriating and what makes it worse is developers, Microsoft and Sony rarely acknowledge it as a problem, they’re not willing to remedy it and it’s unlikely they ever will.
The Dark Side of the Gaming Community
Maybe this one is just mine. I’ve met some great people playing games or talking about them through various sites and yet there seems to be an increasing amount of people intent on making you feel like crap depending on what you like or don’t like. I wrote for a blog some time ago, one particular article stands out which was about Xbox 360 exclusives, and the amount of flak I got for writing it was unreal and yet nothing provocative was mentioned. Comments from others suggested I should kill myself or various other insults and expletives, whilst for me it was quite easy to simply brush off the childishness of it all, pointed at the wrong person, it could have some very detrimental effects!
I can’t be the only writer out there that’s been subjected to this kind of abuse. It’s not just blogs either; you’ll find it where ever you go if you are on any site that involves any kind of interaction. What happened? Why over the last few years has it become necessary for complete strangers to abuse you simply for not believing or liking what you do? Not only that, I’m pretty sure this kind of stuff doesn’t go on in the physical world, or am I out of touch?
It’s a sorry state of affairs and over the years I’ve had to simply stop visiting some sites because I’ve become sick of reading it, all of the time.
It also spills over into online games, get yourself into most public gaming lobbies these days and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll be subjected to some sort of abuse, whether it’s your age, sex, where you’re from or sexual orientation amongst other things, forcing people to only play with people who they know rather than getting out there, meeting new people and making more friends.
I’m all for free speech, but there’s a line between free speech and bullying, what’s worse is without vigilance from the problematic sites you visit, you will always be subjected to it, well, apart from Gamers Rest anyway.
Glitching
A real bugbear of mine, and many others. Glitching, cheating, exploiting, “exploring the game” or however you want to put it is a way that certain players will exploit the game to their advantage, a simple search on YouTube yields masses and masses of tutorials and how-to’s on how to achieve various glitches in a live multiplayer game.
Whilst I do firmly believe there are those out there who truly enjoy trying to find holes in games to see what can be done, and I’m cool with that, it’s when some bring it to live multiplayer games and spoil it for others by getting the edge through cheating.
For me, the Call of Duty series and the Gears of War series are what stand out the most for me. Perhaps this is simply down to the sheer amount of people playing these games making them more viable targets but glitchers, one way or another, truly spoil it for others and what makes it worse, developers tend to be very slow at fixing the exploits if at all. As a result many gamers are simply moving to other games as glitches become more and more popular.
Despite gaming being my number one hobby and it has been for many years, it’s becoming harder and harder to love it like I once did, say 15 years ago, it seems I’m constantly having to adjust the way I interact with my gaming peers, and my games for better or worse but more often than not, the latter.
